Business and education the focus of China mission

04 Sep 2014

A delegation from the City of Karratha led by Mayor Peter Long will visit China next week to discuss business, education and cultural exchange opportunities.

The delegation with members from the Pilbara Institute, Karratha Senior High School, St Luke’s College, Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation, Karratha Districts Chamber of Commerce and the City of Karratha will visit Rizhao, Qingdao and Shanghai.

Meetings with major Chinese companies including Baosteel, who recently made a significant investment into the Pilbara with the purchase of Aquila Resources, will take place as well as the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Lanshan District of Rizhao as a precursor to a Sister City agreement.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said China was the region’s most significant trade and investment partner requiring strong links between business, government and communities.

“We all recognise the importance of China to our regional economy and this delegation is about strengthening those relationships as well as exploring opportunities for new cultural exchanges, trade opportunities and areas of co-operation,” Cr Long said.

“A key aspect of our China strategy is establishing a Sister City relationship with the Lanshan District of Rizhao in Shandong Province, home to the largest iron ore import terminal in China,” he said.

“We will be signing a memorandum of understanding with the Lanshan District Government that will outline some of the areas where we hope to co-operate, particularly in the areas of education, business, and cultural exchange.

“Sister Cities all over Australia provide students the opportunity for exchange programs and cultural activities and I’m pleased to have our local educational institutions on board to hopefully provide these opportunities to our students.”

The delegation will visit Ports, schools and vocational institutions as well as businesses in Rizhao, Qingdao and Shanghai.

A meeting with senior executives from Baosteel will also take place in Shanghai to welcome their investment in the City of Karratha and discuss future opportunities.
