Arts development partnerships

Creating vibrancy, celebrating culture and bringing opportunity to the region, the City partners with leading Western Australian arts organisations as part of the City of Karratha’s Arts Development & Events Three Year Plan 2020 – 2022.

INSPIRE Karratha

2020 - 2023

Each year, Barking Gecko Theatre takes over the Red Earth Arts Precinct to present a series of free theatre performances for school children.  In 2023 we look forward to sharing performances of the beautiful and heart-warming Cicada, following on from the enchantment of HOUSE (2021) and The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker (2022).

This partnership is supported by Woodside Energy.

Powered by this partnership, Perth Festival programs toured to the Red Earth Arts Precinct for REAF 2022. Program highlights included a performance of Jali by Oliver Twist, presented in the Red Earth Arts Precinct theatre, and a selection of Lotterywest Films were shown outdoors on The Shelf at Red Earth Arts Precinct.

Karratha New Music Development Program

1 July 2020 to 30 June 2023

Leading the vision for building opportunities for Western Australian musicians, conductors, composers and music producers from the City, the Karratha New Music Development Program aims to support artists to create new music, perform in the City of Karratha and share their music from our region with other areas of WA.

The program includes community engagement, regular residences, and online musician workshops.

Each year of the partnership, a professional Perth Symphony Orchestra production will be presented at the Red Earth Arts Precinct. The first of these was Mini Mozart in October 2021.

Pilbara Regional Engagement Program

1 July 2021 to 31 December 2023

West Australian Ballet will provide five to seven weeks of in-school activity, Karratha Youth Dance Collective training and a range of community activities each year through this partnership.

Community activities will include masterclasses, adult ballet classes, storytime adventures in community settings and the Project 10 program: a theatre activation program aimed at young people in Year 10 and above, offering them the opportunity to experience being part of a performance.

West Australian Ballet will also provide technical Internship opportunities each year that they are presenting performances in Karratha.

A professional production will be presented at the Red Earth Arts Precinct each year of the partnership, with the next being planned a Gala and children’s production in March 2023.
