The City of Karratha is delivering a Bin Tagging Education Program across approximately 1,300 households during July and August 2026.
The program is designed to help residents correctly separate recycling and general waste, reduce contamination and improve waste recovery outcomes across the community.
As part of the program, recycling and general waste bins in selected areas will be visually inspected prior to collection. Residents may receive an educational bin tag providing information about correct waste disposal practices and tips for improving waste sorting habits.
This program is educational only and is intended to support residents with practical waste education. Bins will continue to be collected unless there are repeated high levels of contamination, following a friendly conversation with the resident.
Why is the program important?
Correctly sorting waste helps:
- reduce contamination in recycling streams
- improve the recovery of recyclable materials
- reduce waste sent to landfill
- improve safety for waste collection workers and the community
- prevent hazardous items from being placed in household bins
Common items that should not go in recycling bins
Items such as:
- bagged recyclables
- food waste
- soft plastics
- batteries
- gas bottles
- chemicals or hazardous waste
can contaminate recycling loads and create safety risks.
Common items that should not go in general bins
- Aerosols
- Batteries
- E waste
- Chemicals
- Oils
- Recycling and containers for change
- Asbestos
- Mobile phones
- EPIRBS
- Paints
What happens if my bin is tagged?
A tag on your bin is simply a helpful guide to show:
- what was done correctly
- what items should be removed in future
- how to improve waste sorting habits
The program is not designed to punish or shame the community.
