The City of Karratha is inviting Expressions of Interest from experienced developers to design, build and operate a minimum four-star hotel within The Quarter precinct.
The site, Lot 7078 Sharpe Avenue, was acquired by the City from DevelopmentWA in 2018, under the condition the site be used for a hotel development.
The Expression of Interest (EOI), opening 18 March 2026, is seeking a qualified proponent to finance, construct and operate a premium hotel meeting the identified shortfall in high-quality accommodation in Karratha.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the move demonstrated the City’s proactive approach to enabling private sector investment and supporting long-term economic diversification.
“This is not a financial commitment from the City, rather we are testing the market and understanding what’s possible,” Mayor Scott said.
“We know there is strong demand for premium accommodation in Karratha, particularly driven by year-round corporate travel and growing tourism visitation. By going to a national EOI, we’re signalling that Karratha is open for business and ready to partner with experienced developers.
“Importantly, as part of any future hotel proposal, the City will seek to retain some level of public green space within the site, integrating open areas and landscaping around the hotel.”
Mayor Scott said the City’s role was to facilitate opportunity, not underwrite risk.
“This process allows us to understand the level of private sector interest and the types of proposals the market can deliver, without committing ratepayer funds,” he said.
“A premium hotel at The Quarter would be a landmark addition to Karratha’s city centre and a strong signal of confidence in our future.”
