More than $133,893 has been awarded to seven local community and sporting organisations across the City of Karratha through Council’s Community Grants and Contributions Scheme.
Council approved seven grant applications at the May Council meeting, with the successful recipients including Pilbara Disability Network, Royal Life Saving Society WA, Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee Inc and Reef Sisters.
The other recipients are Nickol Bay Speedway, Dampier Sharks Football Club and the North Pilbara Football League.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the grants would help associations and individuals to deliver programs, events, and services that benefit the community.
“This funding will help a wide range of activations from club facility works to supporting community events such as the International Day of People With Disability,” Mayor Scott said.
“Every year the City allocates $600,000 in funding through its Large Community Grants program.
“I am pleased to see such a great variety of recipients and look forward to seeing how this funding helps these groups deliver important events for our community.”
Council also requested the Chief Executive write to Rio Tinto to prioritise the approval of and facilitate air conditioning at the Dampier Squash Club noting extreme environmental conditions affect community participation, health, wellbeing and facility usability.
“We recognise the need for sporting facilities in the Pilbara to have adequate cooling and the impact the climate can have on the health and sustainability of our clubs,” Mayor Scott said.
“Council has asked the Chief Executive to address this issue with Rio Tinto, as well as our concern about the ongoing delays of the Dampier Land Transfer and the impacts this is having on local community clubs, facility investment and planning to the Dampier community.”
