The Point Samson Entry Statement project is moving to a new stage, with the City to seek an artist to develop the final design.
The Point Samson Entry Statement was identified as a priority project in the Point Samson Interim Plan.
A co-design process was undertaken in 2025, including consultation with the Point Samson Advisory Group (PSAG) and the wider community, with initial concept designs subsequently developed.
Following feedback from Point Samson community members and PSAG, Council determined to progress the project through a public art commissioning process.
The City will now commence a procurement process to appoint an artist to lead this new stage of the project. The initial concept designs will help inform the artist brief and provide a foundation for further design development.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Council was committed to delivering an entry statement that residents would take pride in.
“During the later stages of our design process, it became clear residents wanted a statement that represented a wider breadth of the Point Samson history and identity,” Mayor Scott said.
“By moving to a public art commissioning process, we are providing an opportunity to develop an entry statement that is responsive to community feedback while allowing for creative interpretation by an artist with relevant public art experience.
“The artist brief will be shaped by the initial concepts as well as the community’s desire for an entry statement that is distinctive, interactive and creates a memorable sense of arrival.”
The City's Arts and Culture team will collate all information to date and progress the planning and procurement activities required to undertake a public art commissioning process in the coming months.
