Every Person Counts
The Census is one of the most important ways our community is seen, heard and supported. Every five years, Australia counts everyone who lives here so governments, services and communities can plan properly for the future. The next Census takes place on Tuesday 11 August 2026. For remote communities, the Census can be completed between July and September 2026.
The Census collects information about how many people live in each community, where people usually live, housing, work and education, and family, cultural and community connections.
For the City of Karratha and the wider Pilbara, getting the Census right matters. Census data helps federal and state governments plan the distribution of funding across Australia for:
- Schools and childcare
- Hospitals and health services
- Roads, transport and traffic solutions
- Housing and community facilities
- Parks, recreation and sporting spaces
In places like Karratha, with large workforce populations, we can be underrepresented.
If people aren’t counted properly in the Census, it can impact the funding, planning and services for the City of Karratha and Pilbara region receives.
That’s why we must come together to make sure every person is counted within the City of Karratha, including our Aboriginal communities and FIFO populations.

Who should be counted?
Make sure everyone staying in your home is counted on the Census form, including:
- Elders and adults
- Children and babies
- Visitors staying overnight
Example question:
Where should I be counted if I split my time between places?
If you spend 50% or more of your time in the City of Karratha, this is considered your Usual Place of Residence for the Census - even if you spend your time off elsewhere. You will need to be counted here.
