The City of Karratha will roll out a bin tagging education program across approximately 1,100 households to help residents correctly separate recycling and general waste.
As part of the program, bin inspections will be undertaken to identify compliant and contaminated bins, with residents receiving educational bin tags containing information about correct waste disposal practices.
The initiative will run during July and August and aims to reduce contamination in recycling bins, and increase awareness of accepted and prohibited waste items, while supporting better long-term waste recovery.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the program was designed to support and educate residents.
“This program is about helping residents better understand what can and can’t go in each bin so we can improve recycling outcomes across our community,” Cr Scott said.
“Incorrect items placed in recycling bins can contaminate recyclable materials, while hazardous items in general waste bins can create safety risks for collection workers and the wider community.
“The bin tags are educational tools designed to provide practical guidance and encourage positive waste sorting habits.”
The program is supported through the CWALGA Waste Sorted Bin Tagging Program.
Residents within the program area are encouraged to keep an eye out for information and bin tags during July and August.
