Extended hours library pilot to improve community access

City of Karratha libraries will soon be open longer, with Council endorsing a 12-month pilot program to trial extended opening hours at the Karratha and Wickham libraries.

Under the pilot, Karratha Library will open until 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursday weeknights and from 11am to 4pm on Sundays, while Wickham Library will open until 5pm on Tuesday and Thursdays and from 11am to 4pm on Sunday.

The pilot, beginning in February, will run for one year to assess community demand, operational impacts and the sustainability of maintaining extended hours long term.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the initiative was a direct response to community feedback.

“We’ve heard from residents who want to use our libraries after work, school and on weekends,” Cr Scott said.

“This pilot will make our libraries more accessible for everyone – from students and shift workers to families – and we’ll be monitoring its success closely over the next 12 months.

“Libraries are vital community hubs that support learning, connection and wellbeing and extending access ensures these benefits are available to more people, more often.”
