Karratha Airport has officially been designated a Restricted Use International Airport and an Alternate International Airport, marking a major milestone toward international connectivity for the region.
The designation enables Karratha Airport to accommodate international aircraft movements on a restricted and pre-approved basis, while also providing capacity to operate as an alternate airport for international flights when required.
Receiving this status is the first step toward establishing international passenger services from Karratha.
The City will now progress to the next phase of the project, which includes attracting an international airline partner and working with the Australian Government to establish the required Border Force and biosecurity facilities and processing arrangements at the Airport.
This next phase will require extended engagement with both federal agencies and airlines, and operational readiness may take up to two years to achieve.
City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the designation positioned the region to unlock future economic opportunities and strengthen its role as a strategic gateway for Northern Australia.
“This marks a significant milestone for the City of Karratha and Karratha Airport, reflecting years of advocacy and a clear vision to strengthen our connectivity and strategic importance within Australia and the broader region,” Mayor Scott said.
“This announcement is an important step forward in positioning Karratha as a key regional gateway, supporting economic growth, investment and greater access to global markets and destinations.
“We will continue working closely with airline partners and the Federal Government to progress the next phase of the project, including the establishment of the required Border Force and biosecurity facilities at the Airport.
“While there is still a lot of work ahead to realise regular international services, this designation demonstrates strong momentum and confidence in Karratha’s future.
“We know the community has long called for international connectivity, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.”
